The recipient of Scott’s 1818 letter “Dear Andrew” was Andrew Lang, a good friend of Scott’s who was Procurator-fiscal for Selkirkshire, and chief magistrate. The engraved portrait is based on a painting by John Graham Gilbert (1794-1866).
